This Victorian brewery tower had previously been converted into a dwelling comprising a single room on each floor accessed via a staircase that wrapped around the interior of the perimeter wall. This limitation meant that the living room was on the fifth floor whilst the kitchen was on the ground floor.
We designed a three storey extension to provide better floorspace at these levels allowing the ground floor to be used for a kitchen, dining and entertaining space. New bedrooms were located on the upper levels of the extension.
Having researched the history of the brewery, and studying the surrounding context, the extension was designed to reflect the form, scale and massing of the terraced housing next to the tower, but constructed as a steel frame with a fully glazed end elevation. This approach results in a scheme that respects the original building by providing a clear definition between the old and new.
