Stables Conversion

Building Type:
Conversion of stables into new home
Location:
Frithsden, Berkhamsted
Status:
Under construction; An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Size:
160 m²

This project has been designed for a young autistic adult who requires 24-hour care and we have worked closely with his family to ensure the internal spaces and environment are suitable for his needs. The project comprises the adaptive reuse and refurbishment of an existing stable block where the bedrooms, bathing and utilitarian spaces are provided.

A new single storey extension has then been added that provides an open-plan living area.
Natural daylight has been carefully considered and the risk of over-heating in the summer has been minimised by providing a wide timber brise soleil along the main elevation facing a new garden courtyard.
Renewable energy services include an air-source heat pump; mechanical ventilation heat recovery; underfloor heating and low energy lighting.
