Due to a steep slope the main entrance to this existing property leads into a ground floor hallway providing access to reception rooms and the kitchen. The garden is located a storey below and was only accessible via a dark hidden staircase that lead down into an unloved lower ground area. We removed the floor and walls of a rear facing reception room at ground floor and designed a new feature staircase providing views and access down to the garden below. The lower ground floor was then extended with a double height space with a new kitchen, dining and sitting areas. From here a pocket door leads through into a large playroom.
A veil of vertical metal fins has been added to the exterior that provide privacy for the occupants from street views and solar shading to the façade. As the sun moves around the property soft shadows follow its course connecting the interior with the wider environment beyond.
Zinc metalwork and stepped facing brick are other features of this unique project.
